The mug begins as Renata's challenge: try to earn the title. Daniel initially earns approval by fixing things, carrying boxes and helping around the house. Those harmless pretexts place him closer to her.

Later, the mug appears beside the face-down wedding photo. It sits near the bed. It returns at the family dinner. The better Daniel becomes at understanding Renata, the worse he becomes at the role printed on the ceramic.

That contradiction is the title's real meaning. He becomes the son-in-law Renata wants, not the one Maya believes she has.
